Los wookies son una especie que hace su primera aparición en forma de cita en la película THX 1138.

El wookiee más famoso es Chewbacca, compañero de Han Solo. Otros wookies conocidos son Lowbacca, Tyvokka, Zaalbar, Chuundar, Attichitcuk, Tarfful, Mallatobuck, Lumpawarrump, Chalmun, Snoova y Hanharr.

Características

Los wookies tienen una altura de más de dos metros y gran cantidad de pelaje que cubre su cuerpo por completo. Son una especie sencilla, pero bastante familiarizada con la tecnología. Hábiles guerreros y mecánicos prefieren llevar una vida simple al lado de sus familias, aunque esto no les impide tener una fluida relación con los sistemas vecinos así como participar en diversos foros diplomáticos.

Los nativos del planeta Kashyyyk, están representados en el Senado Galáctico por el diplomático Yarua, el cual fue amonestado en varias ocasiones por hacer sus deposiciones delante de otros senadores.

Investigaciones posteriores (realizadas en la época imperial) verifican que los wookies robaron toda la tecnología a unos habitantes anteriores de Kashyyyk.

Su idioma consiste en una serie de rugidos y aullidos que para el oído humano pueden parecer divertidos. Es desconcertante que el contrabandista Han Solo pueda entender el lenguaje wookiee, ya que se le ve conversando con el wookiee Chewbacca con total fluidez.

Su principal arma consiste en una ballesta metálica que dispara proyectiles formados por una bala y revestidos por una capa de láser. Algunas de estas ballestas láser pueden estar mal fabricadas y posteriormente pueden provocar un mal funcionamiento que, normalmente, mata a su portador. También tienen lanzas arrojadizas, las cuales son inútiles ante los tanques de la Federación. Otra arma wookiee son los cuchillos rhyk, que son unas enormes cuchillas oxidadas que son muy difíciles de manejar. Los wookies inexpertos en el manejo de estas cuchillas llevan rapadas algunas partes de su cuerpo. Su principal forma de lucha consiste en formar un grupo compacto delante de los tanques separatistas y atacarlos con lanzas. En momentos deseperados puede llegar a suceder que los wookies se monten en deslizadores BARC con cargas explosivas y se estrellen contra deformaciones del terreno u otros compañeros al intentar esquivar los disparos droides, en un intento de estrellarse contra sus tanques.

Varias empresas gálacticas utlizan el pelaje wookiee para fabricar adornos, trajes y alfombras.

Contexto

Durante las Guerras Clon se libró la Batalla de Kashyyyk, en la que un gran número de soldados wookies y parte de la población pereció defendiendo su tierra y bosques sagrados.

Cada soldado wookiee que luchó contra los droides de batalla de la Confederación de Sistemas Independientes, fue honrado y reverenciado. Aunque, como bien dijo un soldado clon de la Legión 501 que combatió en Kasyyyk.: "No entiendo por qué hemos sacrificado tantos soldados por un par de felpudos con patas".

Con el advenimiento del Imperio fue decretada la ley marcial en su mundo y fueron esclavizados y transformados en abrigos exclusivos. Un ejemplo es la ropa que lleva la princesa Leia cuando es capturada en el cuarto episodio. Su ropa, además de estar hecha de pelo de wookiee, utiliza pelaje de ewok y wampa.
